Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
As you read the scripture above, what was your heart’s reaction? Were you just ‘wowed’ by who Jesus is? Were you amazed by Jesus who, as Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) declares, is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
When we are amazed by something, it captures our full attention. We are so “awed” by it that we spend hours thinking about it.
Looking back, I can admit that there was a time when I read scriptures about Jesus and I was somewhat uninterested. I was not amazed – I was not awed – by Jesus. How terribly wrong I was!
Here are but a handful of scriptures that tell us about Jesus:
- Jesus is God’s Son.
John 3:16 (NIV) tells us: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
- Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory.
Hebrews 1:3 (NIV) tells us: The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
- Jesus has all power and authority.
Matthew 28:18 (NIV) tells us: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
- Jesus does not change.
Hebrews 13:8 (NIV) tells us: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
- Jesus is the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
Hebrews 12:2 (NIV) tells us: fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
As believers, we must have a heart that stands amazed, that stands in awe, of Jesus. We must have a heart that has an intense interest to know and follow Jesus.
If this is not your heart’s posture in this moment, let us correct that. Ask God to reveal to you things in your heart that hinder you from seeing the truth of who Jesus is. Ask God for these things to be purged from your heart. And then ask God to create in you a heart that lovingly and willing submits to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV) states: Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
