John 6:38 (NKJV)
For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
In John 6:38, Jesus made it clear that He was not on earth to do what He wanted to do. But rather, Jesus came to do the Father’s will.
Jesus placed great importance on spending time with God. So much so that Jesus would pull away from everyone, go off to a place where he could be alone, so he could enjoy quiet time with God.
Matthew 14:23 (NKJV): And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.
Mark 1:35 (NKJV): Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.
Jesus also spent time with God so that He could know what to do. For example, Jesus spent the entire night praying before selecting the apostles. Luke 6:12-13 (NKJV) tells us: “Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:”
As believers, spending time with God in prayer must be a priority. And that priority is not just reserved for times when life’s challenges are pressing in on us and we feel we have nowhere else to turn.
Just as Jesus did, we should want to pull away from the distractions of this world to sit in God’s presence. To draw closer to Him. To know more about Him. And to hear what God has to say to us.
And just as Jesus did, we should want to be with God so that we can know how to best serve Him. So we can do God’s Will.
Proverbs 2:6 (NIV): For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
