If you reflect on what you did yesterday, last week, or last month, could you say that you were consistent in the things of God? Whether it was in reading and studying the Bible. Praying. Obeying God’s Word. Or sharing about the difference Jesus has made in your life. Just to name a few. If you have not been consistent, what may be the reason why?
In my personal life there are two reasons that rise to the top of the list to explain why I was not being consistent in the things of God. First, I just did not put in the effort to be consistent. And second, I was dealing with guilt over something I had done and I just did not feel like I could come to God in that state. I will explore the first one here.
We must know that our Christian life requires consistency. A life spent following Jesus is not something that is achieved without thought or without purpose. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NKJV): Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.
If we live according to 1 Corinthians 9:24, we would put in the effort to do those things that show that we are determined to live the Christian life victoriously. This includes putting aside our will so that we can pursue God’s Will. As Jesus said in John 6:38: For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me (NKJV).
Our relationship with God is the most valuable thing that we will ever have. Despite the demands of life, or the storms that may come our way, none of this should stop us from living in a way that pleases and honors God. Where, as a result of the way we live our lives, people are drawn to God and want to also live for God.
John 15:5 (NKJV) states: I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
Whether we choose to believe it or not, we need God’s help for everything. As John 15:5 (NKJV) tells us: for without Me you can do nothing. God loves us and wants to help us to live our lives in a way that pleases and honors Him. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can live that kind of life every day. We can live that life where consistency in the things of God is our hallmark. All we need to do is ask. God love us and will give us the help we need. God will show us the way.
Ephesians 2:13 (NKJV) states: But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
