Word Great

Psalm 145:1-3 (NIV)
I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.
Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.
Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can
fathom.

In the verses above, Psalmist David brings us into the intimacy of his praises to God. Psalm 145:3 reveals two things. First, that David knows that God is great and worthy to be praised. And second, David is aware that God’s greatness is far greater than what he – or anyone else for that matter – could ever understand, comprehend, or even measure.

Truth be told, when we think of God and His greatness, like the Psalmist David, it should move us to praise God. Here are some reasons why:

  1. God can do what no one else can do. Luke 1:37 (NKJV) states: For with God nothing will be impossible.
  2. God is above all other gods. Psalm 95:3 (NKJV) states: For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods.
  3. God is more grand than anything on the earth. Psalm 97:5 (NKJV) states: The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

If as believers we do not know that God is great, it will negatively impact our relationship with God. For example, we will always have doubts that God can do what God’s Word says He can do. With this thinking, how can we trust God? How can we have unshakeable faith in God?

If we do not know that God is great, we will always look for help from, or find safety in, things and people other than God. This is not what God wants for us. God loves us and wants us to look to Him in all situations. God wants us to look to Him for all things.

Ephesians 1:17 (NIV) states: I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

If in this moment we cannot boast of God’s greatness, perhaps because of unanswered prayers or perhaps the harsh circumstances of life have made our hearts grow dull to the truth of God’s greatness, let us not remain in this state.

Let us follow the Apostle Paul’s example in Ephesians 1:17 and ask God to give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation to know God better. Let us also ask God to reveal to us everything in our hearts, or perhaps things around us, that hinder us from seeing the truth of God’s greatness. Whatever the hindrance, it must go. And then, let us position ourselves to receive the wisdom and revelation from God so that we can know God better.

Colossians 1:16 (NKJV) states: For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
