Psalm 77:11-12 (NIV):
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
With the above verses in mind, consider the following questions:
- Do I remember God’s deeds and miracles of long ago?
- Do I consider God’s works and meditate on God’s mighty deeds?
It is likely that most of us would like to spend more time thinking about God. For starters, God is the creator of the heavens and the earth. That alone is pretty spectacular!
But life is busy. And a common complaint is that there are just not enough hours in the day to do everything we have to do. Or to do what we would like to do.
Psalm 106:7 (NIV) states: When our ancestors were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.
In the verse above, we see what is possible when we do not remember, or we are not mindful of, who God is and what God has done. That is, we rebel against God. We disobey God. We turn away from God. So, how do we avoid this? Here are some ways:
- Read God’s Word – Through the scriptures we see who God is and learn about God’s mighty works. Psalm 95:3-5 (ESV) states: For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
- Pray – When we talk to God, we get to share what is on our hearts. And as we listen to God, we receive from God’s manifold wisdom and knowledge. Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV) states: Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.
- Be led by the Holy Spirit – When Jesus was preparing to depart, He promised the Holy Spirit. John 14:26 (ESV) states: But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
As believers, we must know that one of the plans of the enemy is to keep us so busy, or so distracted with the things of this world, that we forget about God.
But we can overcome the enemy’s attempts to take us spiritually off course.
Reading the Bible, praying, and being led by the Holy Spirit are just some of the things we can do to keep God at the forefront of our heart and mind. And when God is in the forefront – when we focus on God – despite being in a busy and distracting world, we will live lives that please God. We will live lives in obedience to God.
2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV) states: We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
